Training Requirements
Clinical Service
- Individual/couples Therapy: Provide individual/couples therapy for a total of fourteen (14) clinical hours/week.
- Group Therapy: Co-facilitate one on-going therapy group with a senior staff member.
- Intake: Provide up to four half-hour intake sessions per week.
- On call: Provide 2-3 days of on-call after-hours coverage per month during the academic year.
Outreach
(Total outreach: 8 programs during the academic year as described below)
- Observe/Facilitate two different outreach programs during the W&M students’ orientation.
- Didactic/interactive outreach: Facilitate a minimum of two didactic/interactive outreach workshops per semester(for a total of four didactic outreach programs during the internship year.
- Develop a program and a file for one of the didactic/interactive outreach programs (one per academic year). Choose either a population you want to reach out to or a topic you
believe students would be interested in and develop an outreach
programs with this audience/topic in mind. Advertise and facilitate this workshop. The file you develop is to include:
- Fliers and any other advertising strategies you used.
- Outline of the presentation.
- Didactic information for the facilitator.
- Handouts.
- Bibliographic sources.
- Screening Programs: Participate in at least two screening programs during the internship year (e.g. eating disorders/depression/alcohol screening).
Assessment:
- Administer at least 4 test protocols within the internship year. One of these protocols is to be administered to clients from a culturally diverse population. Two protocols should be completed by the end of the fall semester.
- Choose 2 instruments to be studied, reviewed, and presented (with a brief handout about the instrument) during seminar. Facilitate the discussion of the administration and interpretation of the instrument using a current case. One of these reviews is to be presented during the fall semester.

- Complete referred assessment cases as needed. They may be full or partial assessment batteries based on the referral question. Maximum 2 cases during the internship year.
Supervision:
- Individual Supervision: Receive three-hours/ week of clinical supervision for individual cases, intake evaluations, supervision of a practicum student, and outreach. Make up all missed supervision sessions.
- Supervision of Advanced Practicum students: Provide 1.5 hours of individual supervision for a doctoral level practicum student. Maintain documentation of supervision sessions.
- Group therapy supervision: Receive up to one and a half-hour/week group therapy supervision.
- Peer Supervision: Participate in peer supervision meetings.
- Case presentation: conduct a minimum of one formal case presentation per semester during peer supervision meetings. Provide a short write-up for the case presentation including:
- Demographic data
- Presenting concerns
- Summary of treatment
- Conceptualization
- Questions (specific issues you want input on)
- Supervision of Supervision: Participate in all supervision of supervision sessions.

Supervision case presentation: conduct a minimum of one formal supervision case presentation per semester during supervision of supervision meetings. Provide a short write up with the following parameters:
- Summary of the current status of supervision: number of supervisory sessions, content covered, salient issues, other aspects of the supervision that seem relevant.
- Brief summary of the supervisee’s caseload (e.g. presenting concerns, basic demographics, number of sessions).
- Model or models of supervision that are being utilized to conceptualize the supervisory relationship.
- Questions, requests for input from the S.O.S. group, issues the intern is having difficulty with, etc.
Training Activities
- Training Seminars: Attend and participate in all of the scheduled training seminars including peer supervision and supervision of supervision sessions. Several seminars have presentation requirements – See seminar description.
- Participate in all networking and staff development meetings.
- Staffing meetings: Attend and participate. Wednesdays, 10:00 AM – Noon.
- Attend and participate in meetings with training director.
- Attend Student Affair Meetings.
- Attend and participate in assigned Student Affairs Task Force/Committee meeting.
- Taping: Record ALL counseling sessions with clients’ signed permission – This form will be part of the client’s file.
- Log of clinical and outreach work. Turn in clinical work log (weekly) and training requirement log (F/S semester) to supervisors and a copy to Carina.
Evaluation Activities
- Mid-semester evaluation: An in-house mid-semester evaluation will be conducted to provide specific written feedback to interns. The Counseling Center evaluation form is used for this purpose. Interns will complete an evaluation of their supervisee.
- End of semester evaluation: Supervisors (senior staff and intern in their supervisory role) will complete the Counseling Center evaluation form at the end of each semester.
- Intern evaluation of supervisors: All supervisors will be evaluated by the intern after the intern has been evaluated by the supervisor. A midterm evaluation of the supervisor is encouraged.
- Forms for Academic Programs: Interns are responsible for submitting all required forms to the doctoral program and making copies for Carina, supervisors, and themselves.
- Case conference and supervision presentation Evaluation: Interns will receive an evaluation of their case/supervision presentation. All trainees and senior staff members present during the case presentation will be invited to complete a feedback form for the intern.
- Outreach programming Evaluation: Interns will receive an evaluation of their outreach programs. The coordinator of outreach will complete the evaluation form. The coordinator of outreach may use information obtained from the “Survey Monkey” Outreach Program Evaluation Form sent to members of the audience who agreed to be contacted by Counseling Center for this purpose.
Documentation
- Case notes: Document contact with clients in a timely fashion. Clients’ files are to include all case notes of individual/group sessions and any other contact the intern had with the client including phone conversations. Consultation is also to be documented.
- Intake reports and terminations: Write intake and termination reports in a timely fashion.
- Sign all of your supervisee’s case notes, intake and termination reports.
- File all forms: All signed release forms and signed permission to audio/video tape are part of the client file.
- Clinical work log: Maintain a weekly log of individual clinical work. Turn in this log to supervisor with a copy to the director of training (see form).
- Training requirement log: Log all service delivery activities (see form). Turn log in at the end of each semester to supervisors with a copy to the training director.
- Leave log: Turn in the “leave” form whenever there is a need to be absent from the center. Turn this form into supervisors with a copy to the director of training.
