Make an Appointment
Appointments may be made by calling the Counseling Center at 221-3620, or by
coming to the office in person. We generally have appointments for initial assessments throughout
the week from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., except during lunch. These times are based on
feedback we have received from students. If a student calls for an
appointment and we can’t schedule them the same day, we will schedule
them one day in advance. If the matter is urgent or their schedule
does not fit our intake schedule, a counselor will contact them to
assess their situation and schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
If it is an emergency, please let the front desk know as soon as
possible and arrangements will be made accordingly. After an initial evaluation, a student continuing in counseling may be assigned
to a staff member for individual counseling or group therapy based on availability
and presenting concerns. Please note that there is a greater availability of
appointment times at the beginning of the term than at the middle or end of
the term. If appropriate, a student may be referred to other sources of help
after an initial evaluation. Due to the high demand for services offered by the Counseling Center,
missed appointments result in lost opportunities for our staff to work
with other students who might need help. If you are unable to
keep your appointment, please call to cancel at least 24 hours in advance.
Confidentiality Policy
Counseling is confidential. Because therapy is
most effective when a student can be direct and honest with a counselor
without fear that personal information will be divulged, the Counseling
Center does not release information about a student without that
student's written permission, except in the case of imminent danger to
self or others, child/dependent abuse, court order, or where otherwise
required by law. Notations of counseling are not part of a student's
College record. Our services are free to enrolled William and Mary students as part of their
tuition and student fees. The Counseling Center is the primary mental health service for the campus, and
our staff are on call 24 hours a day during the academic year to respond to psychological
emergencies. We work in close collaboration with the Student Health Center,
the Campus Police, and other offices in emergency situations. In general, if a student's immediate safety is at risk, this is an emergency.
If you have doubts as to whether a situation truly is an emergency, please call
and discuss it with us. We might decide if it is serious enough to warrant
immediate intervention or we might set up a short-term follow-up plan for other
urgent problems. In the event of an emergency during the academic year, a student can often
be seen immediately. During regular working hours (8:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.), a student
can come directly to the Counseling Center at 240 Blow Memorial Hall or call
the office at 221-3620. Emergency service is also available outside of business hours, at night, and
on weekends by calling the Campus Police at 221-4596. They will contact
the counselor on call. If the counselor determines that the student should
be evaluated immediately, we will make arrangements to see the student at the
Student Health Center. During the summer and college vacations, after-hours emergency services are
available from Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, 757-984-9647. Related pages on our website include:
