Parents

As a parent, you can be a very important partner in your student's career development. This website outlines a variety of ways in which you can join Career Center in helping your son or daughter navigate the process.

Tips To Remember:
  • Listen to your student! It is crucial for students to talk about themselves as they discover their strengths and interests in order to find a career that truly suits them.
  • Be patient! Career exploration and job searching can be a long process and each student will approach it a little bit differently. If your son or daughter is really struggling, encourage him or her to make an appointment to see a Career Advisor to complete a self-assessment survey.
  • Your student will have a probably have a different job search experience than you did right out of college, and his or her lifelong career trajectory will probably be much different.  It is true that many graduates today will change their career fields completely three or more times during their work lives, and will change jobs several times within each career field.  Most recent graduates stay at their first job less than 3 years.
  • Encourage your student to take advantage of our programs and services.  In addition to one-on-one career advising, we offer a wide variety of programs each semester.
  • Encourage your son or daughter to get as many career- related job experiences as possible. Utilize internships, summer jobs, informational interviewing and networking to explore career options.
