Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take summer school classes or work on summer research projects?

Unfortunately, no. Conference groups come and go at very random schedules and the obligations associated with these positions do not allow for a set schedule of classes.

Is housing provided?

Yes, it is. You will share an apartment with co-workers.

Will I have a meal plan?

Yes!! As part of your compensation package, you will be given a meal plan to be used when the dining hall is open. You will also have access to a kitchen in your apartment for food preparation when the dining hall is not open.

Will I be able to take a vacation?

Unfortunately, no. Given the workload distribution and the short time span of the job, there is no "vacation time." You will typically receive two days off each week, though not necessarily back-to-back.

What will my hours be?

Each week is different and each position is different. There are no set hours of 8-5 and hours generally vary depending upon your position. There will be rotating shifts and on-call duty nights. Nights and weekends are required.

Do I need a driver's license?

Not only do you need a license, but you must not have any restrictions that would keep you from driving (this means any tickets for traffic violations or accidents in the past 2 years). You will also be required to attend driver's training during your first week of employment.

Do I have to wear a uniform?

Each Conference Services employee will receive several T-shirts and polo shirts. At check-ins and when staffing the Conference Center Office, you will be required to wear the polo shirts with Khaki or black shorts/slacks.

Do I have to work outside?

Yes, there will be some outdoor work required, though most of the work is inside the residence halls (but it is summer in Williamsburg and it's still hot!).

Is training mandatory?

Yes, staff training is critical to a successful summer. The training typically takes place the week after graduation. There will also be some mandatory training sessions throughout the spring semester for supervisory and manager positions.

Do I need to have conference experience?

No previous experience is required, but you do need to have a positive, enthusiastic attitude and the willingness to learn. We are looking for ambitious students who like to work in a team atmosphere and are able to provide quality customer service.
