National Institute of American History & Democracy

Pre-Collegiate Program

Who Should Apply?

Some of the historic places we will visit are well off the beaten path; some require an hour or more of one-way driving in College vans. Tidewater Virginia can be very HOT and HUMID in the summer. Archaeology sites are, by their nature, dirty places. Bugs can be a problem. (The same can sometimes be said of tourists.)

Still interested? GOOD!

We are looking for highly-motivated high-school students with a deep commitment to learning about the past; who believe they have excellent analytical ability; whose writing skills are sound; who thrive in a competitive, though structured, discussion class format; and who would like a taste of life in a college dorm. A particular background in American history is not required. An open mind, independent thinking, creativity, healthy constitution and, above all, a spirit of adventure are the essential ingredients. If you fit this description, the three weeks of this program will seem terribly brief, and what you take away with you will be priceless.
