Brian Hiestand, chief investment officer for the College of William & Mary Foundation, has been named Institutional Investor’s Small Endowment Manager of the Year for 2011.

The award recognizes U.S. institutional investors whose innovative strategies and fiduciary savvy resulted in impressive returns over the past year.  Award winners were chosen by the editorial staff of Institutional Investor magazine based on their market intelligence, performance data and additional information received from the industry following a public call for nominations.

“We are very proud of Brian,” said President Taylor Reveley. “Wise investing is crucially important to the preservation and growth of endowments. And endowments have never been more important to the success of public colleges and universities than they are in today’s world of declining state support. We are very fortunate to have Brian Hiestand at the William & Mary Foundation. He is one of the best.”

Hiestand, who joined the Foundation in 2005, is the first chief investment officer to oversee all of the investment management functions for the College’s endowment, including asset allocation, manager selection and review.

Despite the unsettling economy and related investment environment, investment results for William & Mary’s endowment have been strong.   As of June 30, 2010, the College’s consolidated endowment totaled $539.5 million, with investment performance ranking in the top quartile over the past several years.

“I am flattered that the College of William & Mary has been recognized in this year’s Institutional Investor awards,” said Hiestand.  “This industry honor highlights the dedication of a truly remarkable grouping of loyal William & Mary alumni that chose to serve on the Investment Committee, as well as a talented team in the Investment Office.  I am privileged to be a part of it all.”

Hiestand will be honored and awarded at a dinner and ceremony on Monday, May 16, at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City.
