W&M's outstanding student leaders for fall '09 announced

The Recognizing Achievement in Leadership (RAIL) Outstanding Student Leader of the Month Award recipients for the Fall 2009 semester are:  Tildi Sharp '10 (September), Virginia Newton '10 (October) and Jennifer Schindler '11 (November).

The committee received a record number of nominations this semester and selected these recipients due to their outstanding leadership contributions to William and Mary. The RAIL Committee congratulates and thanks them for their dedication to the College community.

Tildi Sharp, September recipient, spent her summer as a Senior Admission Interviewer. She interviewed over 100 prospective applicants to the College and gave tours to thousands of others and their families. Her work will help the College continue to receive record numbers of applicants. Nominator Wendy Livingston said, "She's not someone who seeks the limelight but her genuine nature and her remarkable abilities to make her someone others want to follow. She's not loud or in your face or overbearing but instead she is thoughtful, admirable and powerful. She is smart, sophisticated, professional, and a friend to all."

Virginia Newton, October recipient, is co-President of Building for Tomorrow, an organization that raises money to build schools in Uganda. She organized two fundraisers: Lose the Shoes Soccer Tournament and a Mark Makeup Party.  She also works in the Social Cognition Lab and is a Fitness Instructor at the Recreation Center. Nominator Cheryl Dickter said, "Virginia has a difficult class and work schedule, but manages to find time to dedicate countless hours to helping those less fortunate than herself. She does all this with passion and grace, and is always smiling. Virginia is truly an inspiration to other college students at W&M and around the globe"

Jennifer Schindler, November award recipient, is president of Spotlight Show Choir and a co-president of the Student CARES Team. Both organizations increased campus programming and initiatives under her leadership, including  a heavier performance schedule for Spotlight and educational campaigns through CARES.  Nominator Claire Meers said, "I think that what it truly comes down to is the fact that Jen understands what it means to be a part of a team and to work with others.  She understands people, and because of that understanding she has been able to develop not only her abilities, but also the abilities of those around her."

The RAIL Committee, established through the Office of Student Activities recognizes these student leaders for their contributions to student leadership and campus life at the College of William and Mary.  We seek those students who add depth and breadth to the College.

Monthly nominations are solicited from faculty, staff and students.  Further information about RAIL, the nomination process, and previous Outstanding Student Leader of the Month award recipients can be found on our website at:  http://www.wm.edu/studentactivities/leadership/rail.php.
