'Tribe4Tomlin' Facebook group tops 500 members| February 17, 2009
A Facebook group dedicated to celebrating the success of Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin (’95) has garnered more than 500 members in the week since its creation.
The group Tribe4Tomlin was created by the Tribe Club, which provides support for William & Mary’s student-athletes. The group features photos, links, and videos featuring both Tomlin and his former William & Mary football coach, Jimmye Laycock. The page is anchored with a video produced by the Tribe Athletics Department. The video features interviews with Tomlin where he discusses his connection to William & Mary and his former football coach.
“Mike’s accomplishment has instilled a sense of pride amongst many Tribe alumni and supporters,” the group’s description says.
Tomlin, 36, became the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl when the Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals on Feb. 1. Even with his success, the William & Mary alumnus has never forgotten his alma mater. In May 2008, he served as the College’s commencement speaker, and month later he returned to Williamsburg to help dedicate the new Jimmye Laycock Football Center.
Like Tribe Athletics, many offices and departments at William & Mary are now using social media sites like Facebook to reach audiences who no longer receive information in traditional ways. Recently, the College’s Office of University Relations announced a Twitter feed, which has already earned 100 followers. The College’s Office of Information Technology is developing a page on the College’s Web site that will showcase the different social networking options available to the campus community.
