Jewusiak family gives $2M to support division of sports medicine at W&M

William & Mary’s Division of Sports Medicine received commitments totaling more than $2 million from the family of a beloved former Tribe Athletics physician, Dr. Edward M. Jewusiak.

The generous gifts — including a recent contribution from his sister, Joan Jewusiak’s estate — support the Dr. Edward M. Jewusiak Memorial Fund.

“Our family is so grateful for the gifts supporting my father’s endowment, including the most recent one made on behalf of the estate of Joan,” said Jennifer Stevens, Jewusiak’s daughter. “The endowment supports two areas which were very near and dear to his heart: education and athletics. ‘Dr. J,’ as he was known in the community, knew the value of education in helping individuals expand their horizons and reach their goals.”

The contributions to the endowment will enable continued advancement of sports medicine initiatives for students, the Department of Athletics, and the Division of Sports Medicine.

“Over the years, the Edward M. Jewusiak Memorial Endowment has supported a number of educational initiatives that we have in our sports medicine program,” said Renée Cork, assistant athletics director for health services.  “This generous gift will allow our staff to seek academic opportunities that will advance their clinical skills and keep our program on the cutting edge of sports medicine, continuing Dr. Jewusiak’s legacy of providing high-quality care to Tribe student-athletes.”

Jewusiak spent his career expanding his own learning and knowledge, including keeping abreast of the latest advances and techniques in the medical field and bringing these new advances and techniques to his patients, according to his family. As a star athlete in high school playing baseball, football and basketball, he continued his love for sports at both the personal and professional level, including pursuing his specialization in sports medicine.

“Dr. Jewusiak was a champion for student-athletes at William & Mary and it’s fitting that his legacy continues through the generosity of this endowment to the university,” said Terry Driscoll, director of athletics. “This gift to Tribe sports will allow our students to have the best in the sports medicine world for many years to come.”

The Division of Sports Medicine is responsible for the health care of more than 500 varsity athletes participating in 23 Division I intercollegiate sports. The athletic training program focuses on the prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries.

“We are grateful for the Jewusiak family’s generous support, which keeps alive the distinguished legacy of Dr. Jewusiak now and for generations to come,” said Matthew T. Lambert ’99, vice president for university advancement. “So many at William & Mary will benefit greatly from these investments in sports medicine and they will undoubtedly help advance athletic and academic excellence for all time coming.”
