This spring found William & Mary students spending time on mats under the mattes.

The Muscarelle Museum of Art at William & Mary is now offering periodic yoga classes on the first floor of the museum, billed as “Yoga in the Galleries.”

Recently, that gave participants the opportunity to enjoy Vinyasa flow yoga amidst breathtaking photographs of Tuscan Italian landscapes and Romanesque monuments on display for the “Matilda of Canossa and the Origins of the Renaissance” exhibition.

“We wanted to offer up our gallery space as a refuge and respite during midterms,” explained Anne Lee Foster, Muscarelle’s assistant registrar, “as well as provide another avenue for students who might not normally come to the museum to be welcomed into the space.

“In addition, being an art institution, we love to encourage other forms of expression.”

The first class in March proved so popular that the museum hosted another session in April, and opened it up to members of the public.

The 90-minute sessions are taught by local yoga instructors Missy Kerner of Body Balance Williamsburg and Lara Whiting of Iron Bound Gym.

The Muscarelle announces new yoga nights on its Facebook page. The classes are free for students and Muscarelle members, $15 for everyone else. No prior yoga experience is necessary. All participants need to bring is a yoga mat and a covered water bottle.
