International Student Success Series begins

The first of three academic workshops that are part of the Office of International Students, Scholars and Programs’ pilot extended orientation for international students -- the International Student Success Series (ISSS) -- takes place today (Wednesday, Sept. 21) at 4 p.m. in the Reves Room at the Reves Center for International Studies.

Designed to provide students with the tools necessary to help them succeed at William & Mary, the first ISSS session will be Communicating in English, a workshop exploring College resources for support in writing papers, giving presentations and speaking with colleagues and friends. It is open to all W&M undergraduate and graduate students. Attendance is optional.

Largely planned by Reves Center for International Studies intern Bronwen Watts, the series will consist of three academic workshops offered through November, and four social and cultural events offered through December. Scheduled are sessions on communicating in English (today), transitioning to life in the United States, and international students and the job search. Social activities will include a day trip to Washington, D.C., and a Thanksgiving movie night.

“Over the summer, another intern and I researched international students’ needs as well as existing extended orientation programs,” said Watts. “My research showed that international students have the greatest difficulties with communicating in English, writing and speaking, being familiar with campus services, understanding American culture, and social integration. At some point during their stay, most will experience culture shock. The research also showed that international students rate career preparation as high on their list of needs. I therefore proposed a program that included a mix of academic and social and cultural sessions, then met with the ISSP staff to determine which parts would be most beneficial to students.”

The International Student Success Series is open to all W&M undergraduate and graduate students.
