W&M named a top producer of U.S. Fulbright students
The College of William and Mary is among the top producers of Fulbright students for 2010-2011, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported recently.
A record 13 students and alumni who applied through William & Mary won Fulbright awards for 2010-2011, more than any other institution in Virginia. The country’s top-producing Fulbright institutions were highlighted in the Oct. 25 edition of The Chronicle. William & Mary tied for 23rd among research institutions and 24th overall in the report.
“William and Mary gives students the tools to change the world,” commented Dean of Arts & Sciences Carl Strikwerda. “Our programs in modern languages, global studies, and international relations do an excellent job preparing students to understand other cultures and do research around the globe.”
Among the 34 schools on the list of top-producing research institutions, only six had higher application/award rates than the College. Of those six, only three had more awards than the College.
The Fulbright competition is administered at the William & Mary by Director of Fellowships Lisa Grimes in the Roy R. Charles Center.
“It’s wonderful to see the number of applications for student grants increasing. Thanks in part to the success of these 13 Fulbright Scholars, 57 students and alumni have applied in this year’s cycle, 14 more than last year. I encourage all current students and alumni who are interested in spending a year studying, researching, or teaching abroad to get in touch with me to discuss the Fulbright program.”
Under the Fulbright program, almost 1,700 American students, artists and young professionals in more than 100 different fields of study have been offered grants to study, teach English, and conduct research in over 130 countries throughout the world beginning this fall.
Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 300,000 participants — chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. In the past 64 years, more than 44,000 students from the United States have benefited from the Fulbright experience. Since 2000, more than 80 students and alumni nominated by William & Mary have been selected as Fulbright scholars.
