W&M earns two CASE gold awards for mascot search

William & Mary recently won two gold awards in the Council for Advancement and Support of Education's 2010 Circle of Excellence Awards for the College's mascot search efforts. Additionally, William & Mary's campus photographer earned two awards for his photography.

William & Mary took the top spot in the categories of Alumni Relations Programs: Creative Use of Technology and New Media and Best Uses of Social Media: Other Uses of Social Media. Photographer Stephen Salpukas earned a silver award and a bronze award in the Individual Photographs category.

"The Best Uses of Social Media category is new for the CASE Circle of Excellence awards in 2010, and we are particularly pleased to be honored during the first judging for this category," said Susan Evans, director of creative services and member of the W&M Mascot Committee. "The most powerful communication efforts integrate multiple social media channels and the CASE recognition for the William & Mary Mascot Search is an important predictor for higher education."

Formed in 2009, the William & Mary Mascot Committee utilized multiple outlets - including blogs, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube -- to solicit ideas for a new College mascot and to communicate with the College community on progress during the search.

The search came to an end in April 2010, when President Taylor Reveley announced the Griffin as the new William & Mary mascot. For more on the mascot search, visit http://www.wm.edu/mascot.
