Registration now open for 'Run for the dream' race

Runners interested in participating in the inaugural Run for the Dream Half Marathon can now register online. The race will take place in Williamsburg on Sunday, May 22, 2011. Registration is limited to 4,000 runners. The first 3,000 registrants will receive a free pass to Busch Gardens for that weekend.

Registration is also open for the Fit to Run, Fit to Dream 8K Run/Walk that will take place the same weekend on Saturday, May 21, 2011. The 8K will be the culmination of a training program in Williamsburg/James City County middle schools focusing on fitness and healthy lifestyles. Armed Forces Day is celebrated on May 21, and the 8K will honor Wounded Warriors and our nation’s military personnel and veterans.

Both races will start on campus, wind through the Historic Area and finish at Zable Stadium.

Race director Dave McGillivray and representatives of his company, DMSE SPORTS, designed the race route and will manage operations. McGillivray has served as the race director of the Boston Marathon for 22 years.

Proceeds from the Run for the Dream will benefit An Achievable Dream, a nationally recognized K-12 school dedicated to the belief that all children can learn and succeed regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds, and that education can break the cycle of poverty. The race will also benefit Wounded Warriors programs, dedicated to assisting and advocating for the severely wounded, ill, and injured members of the armed forces and their families.
