British ambassador to U.S. to make campus visit

British Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald will visit the College of William & Mary campus June 10 for a public event at the Sir Christopher Wren Building. The ambassador will present brief remarks followed by question and answer session in the Sir Christopher Wren Chapel.  The event, which begins at 5:45 p.m., is free and open to the public.

Sheinwald began his term as ambassador to the United States in October 2007.  This is his second U.S. appointment.  Sheinwald served as first-secretary (political) in the embassy from 1983-87.  Since joining the British Diplomatic Service in 1976, he has served in Washington (twice), Brussels (twice), Moscow and London.

Sheinwald’s career for the European Union (EU) began in 1989 as deputy head of the Foreign and Commonwealth Offices (FCO).  His earlier appointments within the EU include serving as the U.K. ambassador and permanent representative in Brussels (2000-03) and as head of its Political and Institutional Section (1993-95).  Sheinwald also held a position as Europe director in the FCO.

He has held several other positions in the FCO in London.  From 1995-98 Sheinwald served as head of news department, and from 1987-89 Sheinwald was deputy head of the Foreign Office’s Policy Planning Staff. 
Early in his career Sheinwald served in Moscow from 1978-79.  He also spent time as the head of the Foreign Office’s Anglo-Soviet Section from 1981-83.

Sheinwald was educated at Harrow County Grammar School and Balliol College, Oxford.  He and his wife have three sons.
