With 36 graduating seniors joining the corps in 2009, William & Mary is the seventh-highest producer of Teach For America corps members among medium-size schools. Last year, 28 William & Mary graduates joined the corps.
According to a press release, Teach For America corps members commit to teach for at least two years in urban and rural public schools and "become lifelong leaders in the effort to expand educational opportunity." The 4,100 new corps members, who will begin teaching this fall, come from over 550 colleges and universities across the country. Eighty-five percent of the 2009 corps is made up of graduating seniors.
Teach For America ranked the schools according to the number of graduating seniors they contributed to the 2009 corps. The schools were divided into three categories according to the number of their undergraduates: small (10,000 and more), medium (3,000 to 9,999) and small (2,999 and fewer).
William & Mary students and alumni have long been known for their commitment to public service. Earlier this year, the College was again listed as one of the top producers of Peace Corps volunteers, ranking fifth among medium-sized schools with 46 undergraduate alumni and two graduate alumni currently serving with the corps.
