Summary

In 1753, the Hallam troupe, having broken with London's New Wells Theatre, arrived in Williamsburg to present The Merchant of Venice, the first professional production of Shakespeare in the New World. In 2009 the Virginia Shakespeare Festival celebrates its 31st annual season. We invite you to join us in this venerable tradition of the Bard in the 'Burg.

Full Description

2009 SEASON

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
June 24 – July 5
One of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies, featuring the contentious lovers Beatrice and Benedick and great clown Constable Dogberry, spouting one malapropism after another. Director Steven Breese (Romeo & Juliet) returns with another classic staging.

THE WINTER'S TALE
July 9 – 19
It is thought by critics to be the most beautiful of the romances, a fairy tale of a jealous king, his wrongfully accused wife, and the redemption that time and nature can bring us all. The frosts of winter thaw to the renewal of spring in an uplifting story of the triumph of unconditional love. We travel from ancient Sicily to Bohemia and back again as director Christopher Owens tackles one of the Bard's most challenging stage directions – "Exit, pursued by a bear."

ART by Yasmina Reza
July 23 – Aug. 2
Winner of London's Olivier Award for Best Comedy and the Tony Award for Best Play, this comedy centers on a group of friends, one of whom has just bought a piece of modern "art" for an enormous sum of money – an all white painting. The complications of this purchase are like a house of cards, falling with hilarious results. Beyond the laughter, you'll be talking about this play for days afterwards.
