W&M statements regarding Austin 'Gus' Deeds
William & Mary issued the following statement regarding Austin "Gus" Deeds on Nov. 19, 2013 - Ed.
William & Mary is very saddened to hear this tragic news. Gus Deeds was a member of the William & Mary community. He had been enrolled as a student at William & Mary since 2007, though not continuously. He withdrew from the College last month and was not currently enrolled at the time of his death. Our hearts go out to the entire Deeds family.
Vice President for Student Affairs Ginger Ambler also released the following statement to the William & Mary community on Nov. 19, 2013 - Ed.
Dear William & Mary Community,
I write to you with very sad news about a member of our community. Earlier this morning the College learned about the tragic death of one of our students, Austin “Gus” Deeds. According to the Virginia State Police, he died at his home this morning as a result of a gunshot wound. An active investigation is underway.
Gus was a 2007 graduate of Bath County High School and first enrolled at William and Mary in the fall of that year. A music major with a strong academic record, Gus had withdrawn from the university earlier this semester and was not enrolled at the time of his death.
Since learning this tragic news, members of the student affairs staff have been reaching out and offering assistance to those who were closest to Gus. As always, counselors are on call on a 24-hour basis and can be reached after hours through the W&M Police at 221-4596. Additionally, the Residence Life staff, Dean of Students Office, campus ministers, and my office are available on a priority basis for those who need us.
This is a heartbreaking time for the Deeds family and for all of us who are part of the extended William & Mary community. Please join me in extending our deepest sympathy to Gus’ family and friends.
