President's message regarding the 'Do One Thing' campaign| January 25, 2010
President Taylor Reveley sent the following message to the William & Mary community on Jan. 25, 2010. - Ed.
Dear William & Mary Community,
I’m delighted to launch the “Do One Thing” (DOT) sustainability campaign at William & Mary. DOT aims to get us all to change one thing in our lives affecting sustainability. IT can be a very small thing. If we live reasonably close to where we work, it might be walking to the office or school most days, or cutting down on bottled water and recycling the remains, or giving reusable shopping bags a try. Those of us in the Brafferton are already into DOT. My personal DOTs are small -- printing on both sides of the paper and, with occasional lapses, drinking my coffee from a mug, not paper cups.
After you’ve chosen your DOT, you can spread the word:
1. Electronically via the W&M DOT Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/wmdot, or
2. Via paper at a DOT drop box on campus (e.g., the Swem library circulation desk, the Sadler Center information booth, or boxes at each school). Paper DOTs will evolve into mosaics thanks to two art classes this spring and then be shown in Swem’s lobby.
Our DOT campaign is the first of its kind. It was developed by the Mason School and the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising firm last fall and enlisted over 1000 participants in a month. Now William & Mary’s Committee on Sustainability is working to expand DOT across the campus. Your help is key! Please spread the word to classmates, teammates, and colleagues. You can submit more than one DOT. Your DOTs can be done by you alone or in a group. The campaign will issue challenges to different parts of the W&M community over the course of the semester. Once all our DOTs are captured in a database, we will try to quantify how much electricity, water, and other resources are being saved.
The Sustainability website www.wm.edu/sites/sustainability says more about all this.
The DOT Campaign will reach your neighborhood on this schedule:
1/25: Business School
1/29: Law School
2/15: Arts & Sciences
3/22: Education School
What if lots of people chose to do one thing—everyday—to save resources?
What if each of us were part of the solution?
What if W&M led the way?
What’s my DOT?
