Note regarding the passing of Elmer Jones, Jr.

The following note was sent to the campus community by Anna Martin on Jan. 25, 2010. - Ed.

It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the death of Elmer Jones, Jr. an employee of Residence Life.  Elmer passed away very suddenly at his home in Smithfield on Sunday, January 24.  He leaves behind his beloved sister Barbara Ann Perry and his niece Monica Perry, both of Smithfield.

Elmer began his career as a temporary employee with the Residence Life Housekeeping Department and became a full-time housekeeping employee in August 1995.  He  was an outstanding employee, who worked very well with his co-workers.  He was seldom absent and always showed pride in his work.  Elmer completed a computer course in November of 2009 and was very proud of that accomplishment.  He appreciated nature and would often go outside on his breaks to watch the birds and the beautiful scenery around him. He was an avid bingo player and he also enjoyed eating good food.  In the 15 years that Elmer worked, all of his co-workers valued him because he was very positive and upbeat and had a beautiful, loving smile.    He rode to work every day from Smithfield on his favorite cousin's ferry named the Pocahontas.

Funeral arrangements for Elmer are being handled by Poole's Funeral Home in Smithfield.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 30 at 1:00 p.m. at Gravel Hill Baptist Church, 5230 Old Stage Highway in Smithfield.

I know you join me in extending our deepest sympathy to Elmer's family and to those whose lives Elmer touched.  He will be missed.
