Notice about Professor Jon S. Kerner

Colleagues,
I want to share the news that Professor Jon S. Kerner passed away at his home recently. Professor Kerner served the College and the Department of Sociology for more than three decades, joining the faculty in 1969. A specialist in organizational sociology and a passionate advocate for sound and forward-looking environmental policy, he chaired the Sociology Department and, long before it was fashionable, taught “as if his hair was on fire.” He also taught in an innovative study-abroad program in Barbados and worked with students who sought deeper engagement in important environmental and social issues.
Family members are planning a local remembrance service for October 19 at 2:00 p.m. Additional details will be made available by the family.
