Campus safety matter

Vice President for Student Affairs Ginger Ambler sent the following message to the campus community on March 13, 2013 - Ed.

Dear Students,

I am writing to inform you about a William & Mary Police investigation that will appear on next week’s crime log.  Because it will likely appear in the press, as well, I want to be sure you have accurate information and to assure you that the university is handling this matter swiftly and appropriately.

Just before spring break, two female students were the target of a serious threat that appeared anonymously on an online public message board. Once the university was notified, William & Mary Police immediately began investigating and were able to identify a suspect, who is also a student.  Monday police charged that suspect. The legal process will now take over. Federal law prohibits me from talking about the specifics of our own internal process, but please know that the safety of those threatened, as well as the safety of the campus community as a whole, is of our utmost concern.

While this incident is not characteristic of the type of community we value at William & Mary, it is an important reminder about “anonymous” postings on online, public message boards. These message boards are not necessarily anonymous and we take all threats – in any form – very seriously.

If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Dean of Students Office.

Sincerely,

Ginger Ambler
