Tree Removal Planned
Vice President for Administration Anna Martin sent the following message to the campus community on Feb. 29, 2012 - Ed.
Over Spring Break, work crews will begin preparing the sites
along Ukrop Way that will house the new fraternity village. You may have
noticed that construction of the replacement parking lot associated with
the project has already begun on north side of William and Mary Hall.
Construction of the houses and the community building is scheduled to begin in
April when that parking lot is complete. The new 12-building complex will
be ready for the 2013 fall semester.
Site preparation includes clearing a portion of the land along Ukrop Way, including the necessary removal of some of the trees in that area. That work will take place next week and be completed before you return from Spring Break.
The impact on the environment was very much on our minds as we evaluated possible locations for this badly needed on-campus housing project. Our feasibility study concluded that this site actually represents much less of an environmental impact than other possible locations. That being said, on a campus with very little open space, some impact to the campus landscape is inevitable. Please be assured that this village’s buildings will be designed to achieve at least LEED silver certification and the project contains a comprehensive landscaping package, including the planting of many replacement trees.
