S.P.A.N. Student Peer Advisory Network

Welcome to the Peer Mentoring Program at The College of William and Mary. With its dynamic student population and challenging academic environment, the university offers a unique opportunity for growth and development. To insure a successful college career, it is important to be fully accustomed to the College. The Peer Mentoring Program will provide a welcoming and supportive experience that will increase your academic, cultural, and social integration into the campus community.

PURPOSE
The purpose of the peer mentorship program is to provide first year multicultural students with personal, academic and social support. Peer mentors are to guide and nurture students during their transition to college and the William and Mary community.

OBJECTIVES

  • Familiarizestudents with William and Mary's resources (library, health center, career services, Office of Multicultural Affairs, etc.)
  • Support and encourage students to maintain a good academic standing and participate in William and Mary activities.
  • Provide a friend that will support and help students adjust academically and socially to the William and Mary community.

HOW THE MENTOR CAN ASSIST YOU

The relationship between the mentor and the student is unique. Since the relationship between the mentor and the student is determined together, they can meet as many times as they want. The mentor will be a resource and guide that shares strategies of success in college by assisting the student in academic and social concerns. The mentor can also familiarize the student with the college resources as well the surrounding city. In addition, the mentor provides a student's view on college life and offers advice on a variety of topics including: what classes to take, where to live, how to manage time, stress, and money.
