Our Mission
The Office of Multicultural Affairs is a department within the Division of
Student Affairs. The Office has evolved from the Office for Minority Student
Affairs, established in 1974 to serve African American students. The office
was changed to the Office of Multicultural Affairs in order to reflect better
the population it serves. The office was established to aid in the development
of a more pluralistic and inviting environment for all. We are committed to
providing programs, services, and promoting cultural activities that will create
an awareness of and appreciation for racial and cultural diversity.
The mission of the Office of Multicultural Affairs is to improve the overall
quality of life for students of color on campus by developing and implementing
educational, cultural, and social programs that will assist the College in recruiting,
retaining, and graduating multicultural and international students. The Office
is also committed to creative leadership that fosters and enriches campus diversity with a goal of promoting cultural understanding and positive relationships that support students' success.
Division of Student Affairs Diversity Statement
The Division of Student Affairs strives to ensure a safe, affirming, and nurturing environment for William and Mary students and staff. Inherent in this mission is a belief that a strong community is built upon, and enriched by, both commonalities and differences. Division members recognize and celebrate the fact that William and Mary students, staff, and faculty are diverse—varying in age, physical abilities and cognitive talents, socioeconomic status, political viewpoints, religious/spiritual and/or philosophical beliefs, and sexual, gender, and racial/ethnic identities. We actively demonstrate our commitment to the success of all community members through our programs, policies, and services. We foster a welcoming environment based upon open and considerate dialogue, mutual understanding, and respect for individual differences.
