Setting up a White List
A White List is important for preventing valid messages from ending up in your Junk Mail folder. Here's how to set one up and add messages to it:
- First, make sure you've set up your mail filter. If you haven't set one up yet, follow these directions first...
- Now, if you haven't already done so, log in to Webmail.
- Next, click on the Folders link on the left-hand side of the screen. This will bring up a list of your folders in the center of the screen.
- Now, click on the Junk Mail folder link. This will bring up the Junk Mail folder. Browse through this list to see if there are any valid messages you'd like to keep.
- If you find a message you want to keep, open the message.
- At the top of the message, you'll see among several options, the option to "Add to White List". Select this option.
- You should now see a new window showing your White List options. The email address of the selected message should appear in the box on the left, while any previously selected White List addresses will appear in the box on the right. If you'd like to add the address on the left to the White List, simply click on the "Add to White List" button below the address.
- That's it. Every time you get a message in your Junk Mail folder that doesn't belong there, simply repeat the above instructions to add that person's address to your White List.
Some Fine Tuning:
How do I get a message out of the Junk Mail folder and into my Inbox?
- From your Junk Mail folder, check the box next to any message you want to keep.
- At the top right-hand side of your list of messages, you should see two buttons, "MOVE" and "COPY" followed by a pulldown window with INBOX listed there. If your rightmost pulldown window shows some other mailbox, simply click on the down arrow immediately to the right of the mailbox name and select INBOX.
- Click the "MOVE" button and you're done. Any checked messages will now have red marks next to them, identifying them as having been deleted from the Junk Mail folder, but don't worry. They will appear in your Inbox next time you check your mail.
I have a lot of friends who use Hotmail, and I don't want to block any Hotmail addresses. Can I add all the addresses from a particular domain name to my White List?
If you want to add all the addresses from a particular domain name, eg: fred@yahoo.com, tom@yahoo.com, etc, here's how:
- When you're in the White List area of your Webmail, instead of entering the full email address of the person you want to add to the White List, simply add the email extension to the list. For example, to add all William & Mary addresses, type this: @wm.edu
- You can also use the wildcard * to add domain names. For example, to allow both secretary@assembly.virginia.gov AND secretary@education.virginia.gov, add the following to your White List: @*.virginia.gov
