Specialty Software
The College has software available for on-campus use to do photo-editing, web-development, create pdf documents, and lots of other tasks. You can ask me to install these applications or you can do it yourself by following the directions below. I'm also fairly proficient at many of these programs, so I can help get you started with a tutorial in most cases. Here's a partial list of the available software:
- Adobe Acrobat
- Adobe Acrobat is a great tool for creating documents where you'd like to retain the formatting and characters of the original. You can also create forms that can be filled out on the computer. Acrobat is especially useful in non-Latin character languages like Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian. Acrobat files (also known as PDF files) require Acrobat Reader to view them.
- Adobe PhotoShop
- Adobe PhotoShop is a professional-quality photo editing program, important for manipulating images for the web or for printing out. Fix colors, remove unwanted elements, reduce image sizes for easy web-viewing, and lots more.
- Macromedia Dreamweaver
- Dreamweaver is the choice on campus for serious web-development and maintenance. Create and edit webpages, keep track of broken links, etc.
Installing the software:
The following instructions are valid only for Windows-based machines, and only if you have KeyServer already installed. All Windows XP machines in the department already have KeyServer pre-installed. For Windows 2000 and Windows 98 machines, contact me first.
From your My Computer, go to the T:\install drive. Go to the KeyApps folder on the Install drive and at the bottom of the list of folders, you should see some installation shortcuts for each of the programs you can install. Double-click on the icon for the program you want to install, then follow the directions. If an icon for the program you installed doesn't appear on your desktop, go to START > PROGRAMS > and then locate the program in the program list. Either click on the program name to run or right-click on it and select "Send to... Desktop" or "Create Shortcut" to make a shortcut.
