SFTP Instructions for Windows (Click Here for Mac instructions)
1. First, you need some SFTP software on your home computer. If you're using Windows at home, the college has software available for download on our IT Website. Click here for download.
| Note: after downloading, the icon should appear on your desktop and it should look like this: |
2. Once you've downloaded the software (I recommend saving it right to your desktop), double-click on the icon, called SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9.exe, to start the auto install.
3. You should now see two new icons on your desktop:
![]()
If you don't see the icons on the desktop, just go to Start > Programs > SSH Secure Shell, then right-click on the Secure Shell Transfer Client link and choose Send to Desktop or Create Shortcut. If you choose the Create Shortcut option, the shortcut is sometimes inconveniently placed directly below the original link. In this case, you can then just drag that new shortcut to the desktop. In any case, the SSH Secure Shell Client shortcut can be deleted if you like. Just drag it to the trash. For SFTP, we really only want the SSH Secure File Transfer:
![]()
4. Start the SSH Secure File Transfer program. Click on the Quick Connect button on the upper left of the window, and the following dialog box should appear:

Enter the following information:
Host Name: cf.campus.wm.edu [NOTE: if you need to have access to the Data folder on Kittyhawk, the host name is sftp.wm.edu instead of cf.campus.wm.edu]
User Name: [Enter your W&M username] (This is the part of your email address before "@wm.edu")
Port Number: 22
Authentication Method: [Use the pulldown arrow to select "Password"]
Now click the Connect button.
5. Enter your college password when prompted and you should see a new window with a dialog box and a button that prompts you to Add Profile. Enter a descriptive name in the dialog box and click the Add Profile button to save these settings so you can skip some of these steps next time around.
6. You should now see the main SFTP window with a list of files and folders on the left and another on the right. The list on the left is your local computer and the list on the right is the remote (college) one. Among the folders on the right, you should see the FILES and HOME folders.
Your Personal H: Drive:
If you double click on the HOME folder, you will find all your H: drive items. Simply drag and drop files between the left and right windows in the SFTP program to move data between your local computer and your college network drive. This is a great way to move large files, and is much more efficient than mailing them to yourself.
The WWW W+M Web Drive:
If you double click the WWW folder, you'll see another list of sub-folders. If you have administrative access to a W+M website, scroll down to the sub-folder you have administrative access to and double click on it. You'll see all the files and folders on your web drive. To move files back and forth between the WWW: drive and your home computer, just drag and drop between the right side and left side of the SFTP window.
The Departmental G: Drive:
If you double click the FILES folder, you'll see another list of sub-folders. If you scroll down to the language sub-folder and double click on it, you'll see all the files and folders on the Modern Languages Departmental G: drive. Conversely, if you scroll down to the religion subfolder and double-click on it, you'll have access to all the files in the Religious Studies G: drive (that is, only if you already have permission to access those folders). To move files back and forth between the G: drive and your home computer, just drag and drop between the right side and left side of the SFTP window.
The DATA folder on the KITTYHAWK Drive:
If you've logged in to sftp.wm.edu and not cdf.campus.wm.edu, you should see the Data folder among your choices on the right of the SFTP window. Double click on that folder name and browse to the folder you need. To move files back and forth between the G: drive and your home computer, just drag and drop between the right side and left side of the SFTP window.
