Teaching Assistant Program

For the beginning and intermediate level courses, the department employs students with advanced language skills as teaching assistants to lead practice sessions two hours per week in support of the three hour per week regular class sessions. Students who have studied abroad are often the most highly qualified candidates for these positons. Through this work, they gain valuable experience in working in front of a group, practicing grammatical structures, carrying out conversational activities and interpreting culture. A faculty member in the language provides guidance and supervision, and ensures that their sessions are tightly synchronized with the regular classwork.

Students interested in a teaching assistant position should fill out an application form available in the department office, Washington Hall 210, toward the end of the spring semester.
