Placement according to high school years of study

If you have completed:

Level I of high school (i.e. French 1, Spanish 1, etc.): Enroll in 101 or 102
 
Level II of high school (i.e. French 2, Spanish 2, etc.): Enroll in 201

Level III of high school (i.e. French 3, Spanish 3, etc.): Enroll in 201 or 202

Level IV of high school (i.e. French 4, Spanish 4, etc.): Enroll in a freshman seminar taught in the language (151) or courses above 202 (e.g. French 210; German 205 or 208); Hispanic Studies 207, etc.). Contact the individual language section coordinator for further recommendations.

Level V or higher: Enroll in an upper-intermediate course (i.e. above 202) or a freshman seminar taught in the language. Contact the individual language section coordinator for further recommendations.

NOTE: The foreign language proficiency requirement for the degree is fulfilled by completion of Level IV in high school.

 

 

Placement according to SAT II scores

0-390: 101
400-490: 201
500-590: 202
600-650:
 Freshman seminar in the language or an upper-intermediate course (above 202). Contact the individual language section coordinator for further recommendations. 
Over 650:
 Freshman seminar in the language or an advanced course (above upper-intermediate). Contact the individual language section coordinator for further recommendations.

NOTE: The Department also awards credits for Advanced Placement Exams in Language and/or Literature, as well as the Higher Level International Baccalaureate. See pertinent sections of the College Catalog’s “Requirements for Degrees” or contact the individual language section coordinators for details.
