        Hispanic Studies Graduate Michelle Neyland Receives Rotary Scholarship to Costa Rica

        Michelle Neyland is a 2005 Hispanic Studies graduate. She is the recipient of the 2007-08 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship for District 7610. In addition to serving as an ambassador of goodwill abroad in Costa Rica, Michelle will be pursing an MA in Media, Conflict and Peace Studies at The University for Peace in Ciudad Colón.


          Participants in W&M Summer Program in Cadiz (Spain) Featured in Local TV

          Author:Cindy Baker. In what may well be a first for William and Mary, a student from the College and her professor were interviewed for a local TV news show—in Spain. Addison Porter ('09) and Francie Cate-Arries, professor of modern languages and literatures, spoke to a reporter at Cadiz’s cultural center, Centro Municipal de Arte Flamenco La Merced. The news report was scheduled to air on TV Onda Cadiz on June 28.

            Professor Geoff Eley, Chair of the German Studies Department at the University of Michigan, Karl Pohrt Distinguished University Professor of History, gave a seminar on Wednesday, March 28th "Rethinking German Modernities: What Comes After the Sonderweg?" and a lecture "Empire by Land or Sea? Germany's Imperial Imaginary, 1871-1945." Professor Eley has published widely in German history of the 19th and 20th centuries, including books on the German Right between Bismarck and the 1920s, and the idea of the Sonderweg in German history, as well as essays on a wide range of subjects. His recent books include: A Crooked Line: From Cultural History to the History of Society (University of Michigan Press, 2005) and Forging Democracy: The History of the Left in Europe, 1850-2000 (Oxford University Press, 2002)

              Prof. Francie Cate Arries receives Commonwealth

              Francie Cate-Arries, professor of Hispanic studies, and Daniel Cristol, associate professor of biology, were selected as two of the 12 statewide recipients of the 2007 Outstanding Faculty Awards, sponsored by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and Dominion. The award recognizes the finest among Virginia’s college faculty for their demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and public service.
