Immerse yourself in another culture, surounded by
a rich language, exotic cuisine,
other students with the same interests,
and a native speaking Tutor!
Students with a special interest in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish language and cultures are encouraged to apply for residence in one of the language houses. Each language house occupies a separate floor in selected residence halls located in the Randolph complex. The academic and cultural mission of each language house is to immerse students in a living environment that fosters increased language study and cultural awareness. The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures employs Language House Tutors who are native speakers of their respective languages.
The Tutors facilitate conversation hours, movie nights, cooking classes, cultural celebrations and many other activities in addition to providing office hours and general assistance; they serve as an invaluable resource for language house residents and the greater campus community.
The languge houses are full for the 2008-2009 academic year. Occasionally, a spot will beome availabe prior to the beginning of the semester, if a contracted student goes abroad. For that reason, there is a wait list. for each House. If you are interested in living in one of the Houses and would like to be put on the waitlist, please send an application to Debi DeBacco at : W&M, Department of Modern Languages, Washington Hall 210, PO Box. 8795, Williamsburg, VA 23187-8795. Applications can be found on line at http://www.wm.edu/reslife/residenceHalls/specInt.php.
To live in a Language House, you DO NOT need to major in that target language! It is preferred that residents have, acquired basic language skills (either in High School or currently), have an interest in the culture and a desire to participate in fun, stimulating House activities and programs.
