THE GERMAN HOUSE

Welcome to the German House!

Our German House, located on the first floor of Giles Hall, offers all those interested in German language and culture the opportunity to share in the ‘German experience’. We host a variety of activities that give you an authentic idea of the cultures of German speaking countries. Also, these activities are a good space to practice your German language skills!

A native speaker of German, our German House Tutor Sara Düttmann from the Universität Münster is here to share her German culture with you and foster your language skills. Everyone interested in German culture and language is welcome!

Conversation Hours for Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Speakers

Our Conversation Hours offer a great opportunity to practice your German Language skills.

If you are taking German 201 or lower, it is a good idea to attend the  Beginner's Conversation Hour:     3/12 @ 12 PM,    3/19 @ 2 PM,

If you are an intermediate or advanced  speaker of German you should attend our
Conversation Hour: 3/13 @ 3PM,   3/16 @ 6PM,   3/17 @ 5:30 PM,   3/19 @ 2 PM,  3/21 @ 2PM,  3/26 @ 5PM

Every Friday: Kaffeeklatsch

An all-time favorite is the traditional Kaffeeklatsch. On Friday afetrnoons at 3pm we meet at the German House, Giles Hall, to enjoy coffee and homemade German cake, play games and speak German from the beginner's to the advanced level. If you are a 101 student you are just as welcome as the advanced speaker. Kaffeeklatsch is the place to meet people who share your interest in German language and culture. Here you can talk about your experiences in Germany, Austria, Switzerland or any other country you've visited. If you are interested in studying abroad, want to participate in the Münster program or have simply never had German cake, pay the German House a visit every Friday at 3pm!

Wednesdays: German Movie Night

Another good opportunity to learn more about German culture is our Deutscher Filmabend. Wednesdays at 8:00pm we are showing contemporary German movies and classics, ranging from comedies to historical movies and crime movies. Join Sarah to watch and discuss the movies people are watching in Germany NOW.

March 12:  Knockin' On Heaven's Door , 8pm

March 19: Mädchen, Mädchen, 8pm (with German subtitles)

March 26 : Anatomie, 8pm (with English subtitles)

German Cooking, Spieleabend, Ausflüge and other special events

At changing times throughout the semester cooking sessions and ‘Spieleabende' are also held. You are welcome to join us in the German House for an evening of good food and conversation or fun and games! There will probably also be an organised trip to the “Waldcafé” to enjoy some German food together. For further information please contact Sarah Düttmann (German House Tutor): sduttmann@wm.edu

Next upcoming events:

Friday, March 28:  Trip to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC.  We are planning to visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's permanent exhibition "The Holocaust". Everybody concerned with the study of German language and culture should spend some time on this most infamous period in German history.  Students will walk through the self-guided exhibition by themselves.  Since the museum provides access to both visitors with little knowledge of the Holocaust and to to those with a deeper understanding of the Shoah, it will meet the needs to the individual student to experience the exhibition at their own pace.  For a late lunch or early dinner, the group will enjoy traditional German and Austrian cuisine either at the "Old Europe - German Restaurant and Rathskeller" or "Café Mozart" (which offers a variety of German products for sale) before we head back to Williamsburg.

Friday, April 4 2008 : Volleyball tournament 4:30  Sunken Garden.  Will the German House defend the "Language House cup?"
