Summer 2008 Apprenticeships at the Embassy of Spain

The Embassy of Spain in Washington, DC will accept up to two William & Mary rising juniors and seniors as interns for eight weeks in the summer of 2008, from late May to late July.  They will work under the direct super­vision of Sr. Jorge Sobredo, the Consejero Cultural, and in collaboration with his staff. 

Duties will include preparation of documents, the creation of databases, archival and on-line research, scheduling cultural programming with Spanish and American museums, film distributors, etc., handling phone calls in Spanish and English, and general office assistance.  Interns will also help pro­gram and organize cultural events such as concerts, lectures and exhibi­tions and attend staff meetings.  The summer hours of the Embassy of Spain are 8:30 am until 3:00 pm with thirty minutes for lunch.

 

Applicants must demonstrate superior command of Spanish; knowledge of a broad range of cultural and artistic expressions including literature, film, theater, music and art; a profes­sional demeanor; an ability to work well with others; and commitment to the full range of cultural diversity represented by Spanish culture.

 

Thanks to generous support from the Charles Center, the internships carry a $3000 stipend.

 

Applications should include a one-page personal statement of personal background and interest, a current academic transcript and a current résumé.  Non-Hispanic Studies major should also supply two letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes with the applica­tion or directly to Prof. Greenia; at least one letter must address language proficiency.  Selection will be made by faculty ­in Hispanic Studies in consultation with the office of the Consejero Cultural of the Embassy of Spain.
