Hispanic Studies Major

What Do I Need to Do to Become a Hispanic Studies major?

Undeclared majors select their major field of study by the end of their sophomore year, although new majors or a change of major to Hispanic Studies may be declared after this time. To declare a Hispanic Studies major, the student should fill out a "Declaration of Major" form, have it signed by the Hispanic Studies Section Coordinator, Prof. Cate Arries, and submit the form to the Office of the Registrar.

Many Hispanic Studies majors declare two majors, typically combining their proficiency in Spanish language and knowledge of Hispanic culture, history, and literature with a second field of study in the social sciences, the humanities, or business. Such combinations prove to be particularly useful for students interested in industry, commerce, government, public or social services, and other careers with significant contact with international (e.g. Spanish or Latin American) or U.S. Hispanic communities, markets, or clientele.

General curricular requirements for Hispanic Studies majors are listed below:

Declaring a Minor in Hispanic Studies

Majors in other fields who decide not to double-major in Hispanic Studies may elect to pursue a Minor program of study in Hispanic Studies. A minor in Hispanic Studies requires a minimum of twenty-one credits chosen from courses numbered 208 and above, with the exception of 397 and 398. HS 151 may also count toward the minor.

Courses completed for the minor in Hispanic Studies also may satisfy GRE requirements (or Area & Sequence requirements) but may not be taken on a pass/fail basis. A maximum of two courses may be counted toward both a major and a minor. A student must earn at least a 2.0 grade point average in the minor.

A student who intends to complete a Hispanic Studies Minor needs to declare this intention to the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures before registration for the final semester of the senior year. Upon completing requirements for the Hispanic Studies Minor, the student must present the list of appropriate courses to the Hispanic Studies Section Coordinator (Prof. Cate-Arries) for certification. Additionally, this list must be presented to the Registrar for verification and for posting on the permanent record card at the time of graduation.
