German Studies at William & Mary

Welcome to the web pages of the German section. Please use the links to the left to explore our program, find out about our faculty, and discover valuable resources on the web. As a German Studies section, we offer opportunities to study German language, literature, thought, and culture at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as several courses concerning aspects of German Studies taught in English translation. Descriptions of individual courses are available through the academics link, and for some courses, a link to the current syllabus is provided there. Please contact German Studies section head Prof. Bruce Campbell for more information on the German Studies concentration, a minor in German, study abroad opportunities, and more specific questions regarding German Studies at The College of William and Mary.

The German Studies curriculum, completely revised in 2003-2004, is designed to help students formulate research questions and to engage in independent scholarly work at an advanced level. Faculty closely mentor students on research projects and provide opportunities for actual research in the field. The program's scholarship closely reflects the kind of  research in German Studies currently conducted nationally and internationally in the discipline.

We strongly encourage our students to study in a German-speaking country. If you move the cursor over "Study Abroad" to the left, you will find links to information about our summer and junior-year programs in Münster, Germany.
