Chinese at William & Mary

Why should I study Chinese? Because China's cultural and economic dynamics has made China one of the fastest-growing countries in the world.
More people speak Chinese than any other language. Chinese culture is one of the most ancient cultures in the world. While other ancient civilizations have declined, Chinese civilization has continued to evolve for thousands of years to the present day. Right now, as the fourth-biggest U.S. trading partner, China is the world's leading destination for overseas investment. As China's role in the world economy and politics also becomes increasingly important, Chinese has been identified by the US government as a "strategic language." There has been a drastic increase of interest in studying Chinese language and culture both in the US and in other parts of the world.
