The Department of Mathematics presently comprises 20 full-time faculty, who balance active research programs with a commitment to undergraduate teaching. The department includes a large group of researchers in linear algebra, matrix theory, and operator theory; other faculty research interests include analysis, dynamical systems, mathematical biology, differential equations, numerical optimization, operations research, statistics, and topology. The usual teaching load is two courses per semester. The department does not maintain a formal Ph.D. program, but interested faculty can and do direct doctoral students through the Department of Applied Science.
Computational Science
The College of William & Mary has made an institutional commitment to computational science, formalized by the creation of its interdisciplinary Computational Science Cluster. The Department of Mathematics participates in the Cluster, as well as in a graduate program in Computational Operations Research administered by the Department of Computer Science.
Biology
Funded by grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and National Science Foundation, the Departments of Biology and Mathematics are in the process of creating an undergraduate curriculum in biomathematics. Courses to be offered in the recent academic years include Math 131, 132 (Calculus for the Life Sciences), Math 351 (Applied Statistics), Math 345 (Introduction to Mathematical Biology), Math 410 (Ecology and evolution of metapopulation), Math 490 (Mathemtaical Biology and PDE).
The College
Founded in 1693, The College of William & Mary is the second oldest educational institution in the United States. Although William & Mary retains its traditional title of "College", originally bestowed by royal charter, it is in reality a small university that offers advanced degrees in several fields. It is one of only eight U.S. institutions of higher education designated a "Public Ivy," i.e., a state-assisted institution that offers a superior education at a cost far below that of Ivy League schools.
