Recent and Current News, 2002-2003
New Chair
Professor Chi-Kwong Li has
become the department chair starting July 1, 2002. We thank Professor
Larry
Leemis for his service to the department for the last three years.
New Faculty and Research Associate
-
Sebastian Schreiber has joined
our department as an associate professor in the Fall 2002. He will continue
his research is in mathematical biology (sponsored by NSF), and will help
us to develop the undergraduate curriculum and our research in mathematical
biology.

Al Bronstein joined our department
as a visiting assitant professor in the Summer of 2002. His interest is
in mathematical finance, and he will offer a seminar course on this topic
in the Spring of 2003.

Robert Reams joined our department
as a visiting assistant professor in the Fall of 2002. His interest is
in matrix theory and he will collaborate with the matrix theory group of
the department.

Greg Smith of the
Applied Science Department will be a faculty member associcated with our
department starting Fall 2002. He will collaborate with our mathematical
biology research group.

Heather Sasinowska of INCOGEN
joined our department as a research associate in the Fall of 2002. She
will collaborate with our mathematical biology and statistics colleagues.
Visitors
Professors Byungik Kahng
(S. Korea), Dan Moerder (NASA),
and Sivaram Narayan (Central
Michigan University) are visiting our department this semester, and will
work with our colleagues.
Retired Faculty
Professor David Stanford
retired in the Spring of 2002. A party was held on April 26 at Reves Center
honoring him. We wish that Professor Stanford an enjoyable retirement.

Recent Faculty Awards
Professor John Drew
has been selected as the recipient of the 2003 Thomas A. Graves, Jr. Award
for Excellence in
Teaching. This award was created to underscore the importance William
and Mary attaches to superior teaching. The award will be presented to
John at Commencement on May 11, 2003.
Professor Chi-Kwong Li
has
been selected as the recipient of the Faculty Award for the Advancement
of Teaching by the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at the College of William
and Mary. This award is offered to "a faculty member who has shown a commitment
to the concept of an academic community in which teachers and students
work together to advance knowledge."

Professor Junping Shi has been
selected to receive one of 24 Ralph E. Powe Junior faculty Enhancement
Awards among 81 applicants. The Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement
Awards provide seed money for research by junior faculty at Oak Ridge
Associated Universities (ORAU) member institutions. These awards are
intended to enrich the research and professional growth of young faculty
and result in new funding opportunities. The award amount provided by ORAU
is $5000. The applicant's institution is required to match the award
with at least an additional $5000.

Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award Winners

Professor Hugo Woerdeman
has been appointed as a Hamilton Professor starting in Fall 2003 in recognition
of his outstanding contribution to the college.
