Math 112

Second semester calculus

Description of the course

Concepts covered in this course include: methods of integration; applications of the integral to geometry, physics, and economics; slope fields and the qualitative behavior of solutions to differential equations; and Taylor series.
 

Successful completion of Math 112 is awarded 4 semester hours of credit. The lecture sections of the course meet 3 times a week for 50 minutes or twice a week for 80 minutes.  The fourth hour is a required class meeting in which students meet with a lab assistant in a computer lab to work through additional material using the computer algebra system Matlab.  The laboratory assignments complement the lectures and examine themes that run throughout the course. The lab component accounts for 15% of the course grade.

Textbook 

Calculus: Single Variable Essential Calculus, Early Transcendentals (1st edition), by James Stewart. After a brief review of concepts from Chapter 5, the course covers most of the sections in chapters 6, 7 & 8.

    • The TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator is recommended for Math 112.    If you have a different model, you may either buy a TI-83 or TI-84 or trade calculators for the semester with a student who has a TI-83 or TI-84.
    • On tests and quizzes, you will not be allowed to use a TI-89 or TI-92 calculator or any calculator that performs symbolic manipulations.

Labs

Students will meet with a teaching assistant for the 4th hour of the course each week, beginning the first full week of classes.   Homework assignments are given as part of the lab component of the course.

Software

download software package   wmmath.tar   wmmath.msi  startup.m

Instructions for installing the Department of Mathematics course software.

The installation procedures have been tested under Windows XP Pro, Mac OS/X, Linux, and Unix. There may be problems with earlier versions of Apple OS and ancient versions of Windows and MS-DOS. If you have an older system and run into trouble, let us know.

Windows users: The installation package is a standard Microsoft installer file.

  • It assumes that Matlab has been installed in C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2006b.
  • If you have already set up the file C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2006b\toolbox\local\startup, then you should save a copy of this file under a different name because the installer will over write startup.m.  After the installation you can edit the new startup.m to include your old stuff.
  • This installation package assumes that you do not already have a directory C:\Program Files\WM Math Courseware. If you do, there is a chance the installation will clobber some of your files in this directory.


           What you need to do:

(1) Download the file wmmath.msi.

(2) Open the file wmmath.msi.

(3) Follow the instructions that appear.

(Amendment in March 2, 2007: The above instruction assumes that Matlab has been installed in C:\Program Files\MATLAB, but if your Matlab is installed in C:\MATLAB, download the startup.m file above to the subdirectory toolbox\local of wherever Matlab R2006b  is installed.)

  Mac Users: The installation package is a standard Unix tar file.

  • If you have already set the file ~/matlab/startup.m, then you should save a copy of this file under a different name,  because the installer will over write startup.m.  After the installation you can edit the new startup.m to include your old stuff.

 
            What you need to do:

            (1) Download the file wmmath.tar and double click on it to open it. This will create a new directory named "matlab" in your download directory.

(2) Move the directory "matlab" to your home directory.

 

  Unix/Linux users: The installation package is a standard Unix tar file.

  • If you have already set the fil~/matlab/startup.m, then you should save a copy of this file under a different name becausethe installer will over write startup.m.  After the installation you can edit the new startup.m to include your old stuff.
  • The instructions below pertain to a GUI-free, command-line installation. Some Linux user interfaces support untarring files by clicking on file icons.

 

What you need to do:

(1) Download the file wmmath.tar and move it to your home directory.

(2) Untar wmmath.tar using the incantation

       tar xkvf wmmath.tar

    This step will place files in ~matlab and ~/matlab/wm_math. The option "k" will prevent any of your files being overwritten, in the  remote chance you have already created files with the same names in the same places.

Final Exam

The exam for all sections of Math 112 is administered during the math block as seen in the exam schedule.  The block final exam for Spring  semester 2008 is Monday, April 28.  The room assignments for the final exam are posted in the Mathematics Department in Jones Hall the week before the exam.

Tutoring for Math 111 and Math 112

Free tutoring (beginning the first Sunday after classes begin) is provided by graduate assistants for Math 111 and Math 112 in Jones 112 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday evenings.  If you wish to hire a private tutor, a list of tutors is available from the bulletin board next to the Math Department office in Jones 114.
