Sunken Garden

The Sunken Garden serves as a place for relaxation and recreation. Beyond the Sunken Garden is a natural setting preserved because Thomas Jefferson said that "the College shall forever look upon the country."
The Sunken Garden is lined with Common Boxwoods (Buxus sempervirens).
Beyond the Boxwoods on either side are two rows of American Beeches (Fagus grandifolia).
The brick posts that mark the west end of the garden are each covered by a different variety of vine (foreground at left).
Beyond them can be seen the tallest Dawn Redwoods (Metasquoia glyptostroboides) in North America.
