Principles of Civil Procedure
Kevin M. Clermont
KF8840 .C54 2005
Concise Hornbook Series

If you are just starting to buckle down and study for your Civil Procedure exam and you do not know where to begin, the table of contents of this book could be an excellent skeleton for your first stab at an outline. Also, beyond serving as a tool in constructing an outline, if at the end of the semester you are still plagued by looming questions such as “When does federal law apply in federal court?” this book has the answers. Those answers, however, are not always easy to locate so this might not be the book you are looking for if you are in search of a last minute study aid. Although, it will take some time and determination to get through the book it will be well worth it come exams.

Civil Procedure: Quick Review Sum & Substance, 5th ed.
Arthur R. Miller & Jack H. Friedenthal
KF8840 .F73 2001
Quick Review Series

If you are down to the wire and still do not comprehend a concept this is the book to turn to, to give you a brief explanation on the concept. It contains a capsule outline as well as numerous illustrations on key elements in civil procedure. After each unit, there are diagnostic quizzes to test your understanding of the key concepts reviewed in the unit. This book is a good source for starting an outline but not the book to turn to for in depth and comprehensive explanations of concepts.

Civil Procedure: Examples and Explanations, 5th ed.
Joseph W. Glannon
KF8840 .G58 2006
Examples and Explanations Series

Most likely all of you have seen someone toting around this rather large tan and purple book in the library or to class; that is because this book is the essential study guide for the subject. While this book is not the best resource for creating an outline it is extremely helpful in clarifying specific subject matter. Each chapter provides an overview on a particular subject followed by questions to test your knowledge on the subject and explanations to help you identify your weak spots in understanding. The book also acts to help synthesize information so that you will be better prepared for analyzing fact patterns.

Civil Procedure
Samuel Issacharoff
KF8840 .I85 2005
Concepts and Insights Series

In search of a short and simplistic overview of civil procedure? Look no further than Issacharoff’s Civil Procedure: Concepts and Insights. This book is a great resource for anyone who is having trouble grappling with the basic principles of Civil Procedure and is interested in a fundamental refresher course on the subject. It’s simplistic and telling breakdowns of pivotal cases provide insight on what the key issues are in each case as well as information on how the cases shaped the current Federal Rules. While helpful to develop a broad understanding of Civil Procedure this book is not the book to turn to when outlining or to acquire an in depth understanding of a particular subject.

Understanding Civil Procedure, 3rd ed.
Gene R. Shreve & Peter Raven-Hansen
KF8840 .S484 2002
Legal Text Series

Although hefty, if you have the time and desire to really delve into civil procedure then this is book for you. It provides an in depth and extensive review and unlike your casebook this book is easy to follow and coherent. The book is centered on understanding why the principles of civil procedure were created and how they are currently invoked. Accordingly, cases are discussed in timeline format and analysis on how the case shaped the current rules is provided. Each subject matter is addressed in about seventy pages so it is unlikely that you will want to read the entire book but if you are looking for insightful information on a particular subject then it may be worth taking the time to sit down and read-up on the matter.

Questions & Answers: Civil Procedure
William V. Dorsaneo, III & Elizabeth G. Thornburg
KF8841 .D67 2004
Questions & Answers Series

Like the title proclaims this book is full of question and answers on Civil Procedure. This book can be used either to reinforce and clarify material as you learn it in class or to test yourself on previously learned material in preparation for finals. Through answering the questions and learning the reasoning behind the correct, as well as incorrect, answers you will be able to identify your individual strengths and weakness in a particular subject matter well before going into an exam. Additionally, this book serves as an excellent source to familiarize yourself with hypothetical patterns that you may encounter on the test.

Civil Procedure, In a Nutshell, 5th ed.
Mary Kay Kane
KF8841 .K36 2003
Nutshell Series

Although this book is small in size it is mighty in content. If you are having difficulty understanding a specific topic or rule and are looking for a quick straight forward answer then the Nutshell will prove to be an invaluable resource. Its four tables of contents allow you to quickly navigate through the material and find the precise issue, rule, or case that you are looking for. The first table of contents is organized by chapter heading and each chapter reflects where you are in the proceeding. For example the second chapter of the book is titled “Choosing the Proper Court”; and as you can guess this chapter covers personal jurisdiction, subject matter jurisdiction, and venue. The second table of contents is broken down by case and while the book does not provide case briefs for a specific case it does pinpoint what aspects of a case helped mold the current federal rules on the issue addressed in the case. The third table of contents is broken down by statue and, last but not least, the fourth table contents are broken down by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
