Items that can be borrowed include books, microforms, videos/DVDS, dissertations, and government documents. Digital or print copies of journal articles or selections from printed or microform publications can also be provided. Before submitting an ILL request, check LION, our online catalog, to determine if the material is available at either the Law Library or Swem Library. If neither library owns the item, or if the item is not available for checkout or recall, an ILL can be requested. Most interlibrary loan requests are processed free of charge. However, should the lending library charge a fee, you must approve this expenditure before the request is processed. Students and journals are responsible for fees incurred for ILL loans and photocopies. ILL materials can take anywhere from 24 hours up to two weeks to arrive. When your item arrives, you will receive an e-mail with pickup instructions. If you request a photocopy, it can be sent to you electronically or you can pick up a print copy, Loan periods range from 30-60 days. Most ILLs cannot be renewed beyond their original due date. Please plan your research accordingly and return your books on time. Should you need to extend the loan, request a renewal BEFORE the item is due. Any fines for overdue materials or fees for lost or damaged materials will be the responsibility of the individual borrowing the items. Requests can be made using our electronic request forms. Please choose the appropriate form for journal, faculty/RA, or student personal requests. Faculty members may request interlibrary loans by telephone or e-mail, as well as by using the electronic form. All fields on the ILL form must be filled in or the request will not be processed. Students requesting an ILL must search their item first in LION and then on WorldCat. The OCLC Accession Number must be included on all ILL requests. The copyright law of the United States governs the making of reproductions of copyrighted materials. Before requesting an ILL, you must confirm that you have read and understand these copyright restrictions. If you would like to know more about how copyright law relates to interlibrary loan requests, you can find information at the following website: http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/l-108g.htm Our library stores scanned copies of every photocopy requested through interlibrary loan. If a request is filled by electronic means, we do not create a print copy of the material, but rather send the item directly to the patron in electronic form. If a copy arrives by mail or fax, the material is scanned to create an electronic copy. All scanned copies are saved until the user has completed the project for which the material was requested, after which the scanned material is deleted. If a print copy of the material is lost, you can request an electronic copy from the interlibrary loan supervisor. Photocopies requested by other libraries are sent electronically unless the requesting library specifically requests a print copy. Incoming requests received during normal business hours are processed within 24 hours.
