John Marshall Papers
The Papers of John Marshall is the first scholarly annotated edition of the extant correspondence and papers of the great statesman and jurist who served as chief justice of the United States from 1801 to 1835. The project was organized in 1966 under the sponsorship of the College of William and Mary and the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture. Over the years an exhaustive search of widely scattered public and private archives has yielded a collection of 8,500 documents relating to Marshall's life and career. These documents and the project's editorial offices are now housed at the William and Mary Law School. To date eleven volumes of the edition have been published by the University of North Carolina Press. The twelfth and final volume is nearing completion and will be published in the spring of 2006. In addition to publication of the papers, the project serves as a research center and clearinghouse for the scholarly study of John Marshall and the Supreme Court. Dr. Charles Hobson, director of the project, is the author of The Great Chief Justice: John Marshall and the Rule of Law (1996) and has published numerous articles and lectured widely on Marshall and his times. The Marshall Papers project has a web page located within the web site of the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture. The Marshall Papers home page is available at http://www.wm.edu/jmp/index.htm. The Omohundro Institute's home page is available at http://www.wm.edu/oieahc/.
