Established in 1990, the Student Division of the Institute of Bill of Rights Law is a non-partisan group that explores issues relating to the Bill of Rights. The Student Division affords students the opportunity to organize a variety of extracurricular programs, ranging from the Hampton Roads Schools Project and the Scholarly Luncheon Series, to the annual Spring Symposium. Student Divison members also assume an active role in the Institute itself, and in so doing, make valuable contributions to one of the nation's most prominent centers for the study of constitutional law.

HAMPTON ROADS SCHOOLS PROJECT The Student Division has designed a comprehensive educational curriculum on the Bill of Rights for local public and private school children. Law students go to the schools to discuss issues and relavant court cases involving the Bill of Rights, particularly the First and Fourth amendments.
STUDENT SYMPOSIUM In the spring of 2005, the symposium featured Congressman Bobby Scott (D-Virgina); Jay Sekulow, Cheif Counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice; Nadine Strossen, President of the American Civil Liberties Union, and William Van Alstyne, Lee Professor at William & Mary School of Law. Panelists discussed "Orden v. Perry and McCreary v. ACLU of Kentucky: An Analysis of the Ten Commandments Cases."
BUSHROOD MOOT TOURNAMENT AND THE EDMUND RANDOLPH AWARD In conjunction with the Moot Court Team, the Student Division co-hosts the final round of the moot court tournament in which student finalists argue in front of a panel including students, faculty and the recipient of the Edmund Randolph Award. Presented for the first time in 2008, the Edmund Randolph Award is awarded to a respected appellate advocate. In 2008, the award went to Seth Waxman, former Solicitor General of the United States.
