The Student Division is designed to provide law students with the opportunity
to participate in activities relating to the Constitution and Bill of
Rights.
» Supreme Court Preview
Each year in late September or early October, the Institute marks the
commencement of the new term of the Supreme Court of the United States
with its Supreme Court Preview program.
» Scholarly Symposia
Each year, the Institute of Bill of Rights Law sponsors major scholarly
symposia on a topic of current constitutional significance. Leading
scholars from around the nation assemble at the William & Mary School
of Law to present papers and to debate their merits. These Institute
of Bill of Rights Law symposia have become one of the most significant
academic forums for the publication of scholarship on the Constitution
and the Bill of Rights.
» Lectures & Debates
Series
IBRL supports the education of students and the broader William and
Mary community by sponsoring a guest lecture series. Each year, several
outstanding lawyers, legal academics, and political leaders deliver
public lectures on constitutional issues of broad public concern.
IBRL helps foster deeper understanding of significant contemporary constitutional
issues through its public debate series. Recent debates and lectures have considered apologies for slavery, the current state of reproductive rights in America, the public use doctrine, and the War on Terror
» John Marshall Symposia
2001 marked the bicentennial of the appointment of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1801-1835 and namesake of William and Mary's Marshall-Wythe School of Law.
» Distinguished Lee Visiting
Professor
The Lee Professorship is an endowed visiting chair awarded each year
to a person of national stature in academic fields relating to the mission
of the Institute. The Lee Professors have contributed greatly to the
programs of the Institute and to the academic life of the law school,
offering fresh perspectives and contributing to the opportunities for
development of both students and faculty.
» Pinter Fellow
The Pinter Fellowship was established to bring to the Law School
leading lawyers and scholars of Sexuality and the Law. The Pinter
Fellow, selected by the Institute of Bill of Rights Law, is in residence
at the Law School to deliver lectures, meet informally with students
and participate generally in the life of the Law School and the College.
