Considering a University Apology for Slavery:
The Case of William & Mary President Thomas R. Dew Earlier this year, the Virginia Legislature became the first state legislature in the nation to issue an official apology for slavery. In September, in an emotional speech, the mayor of London issued a historic apology for slavery. Currently, legislative bodies throghout the nation are debating whether to issue their own apologies. On the afternoon of Thursday, September 20, 2007, University of Alabama Law Professor Alfred Brophy spoke to William & Mary students, faculty and community. This event was sponsored jointly by the Student Division of the Institute of Bill of Rights Law, the William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal, and the Black Law Students Association.
