Volunteering

There are many opportunities for William & Mary Law School Alumni to donate their time and expertise to aid the current student body. Below are several of these opportunities; new programs are constantly evolving.

Click here for a list of Volunteer Opportunities for Law School Alumni. Please indicate which program(s) interest you and fax the completed form back to the Development and Alumni Affairs Office (757) 221-6329.

Admitted Students Day
Each April, the Office of Admission sponsors a day of informational programs for admitted students. Association Board members speak with groups of prospective students about life at the Law School and about the numerous programs and services offered through the Law School Association. Alumni are invited to attend and talk informally with students considering William & Mary's School of Law.

Co-Counsel Program
The Co-Counsel Program matches current Marshall-Wythe students with volunteer alumni mentors with similar career interests. Through informal social contact, alumni advise students on law school, career opportunities and issues relating to the field of law. Matches are generally made during the first year of law school and continue throughout the three years of study.

Mock Interviews
With alumni assistance, students are given the opportunity to hone their interviewing skills. Each year graduates return to campus to participate in simulated interviews which allow students to experience the legal interview process. Alumni critique each student, providing them with valuable feedback on improving their skills.

For more information about any of the programs offered through the Law School Association, please contact the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs at (757) 221-3795 or lsdevl|at|wm.edu.

Alumni Admission Ambassador Program
With the increasing competition for diverse and talented students, the Admission Office needs to convey the William & Mary message to a select number of applicants in many ways. Our new William & Mary Law School Alumni Admission Ambassador Program focuses on our admitted applicant group. Our admission effort gains a competitive edge when alumni are willing to share their first-hand knowledge of the Law School and the quality of legal education we offer. In addition, many admitted students welcome the change to gain an alumnus's perspective on the sense of community at the Law School , student-faculty rapport, or the marketability of a William & Mary law degree in the area of the country in which the alumnus practices.

Our alumni can provide a great service to the Law School with a relatively limited amount of time. In addition, they can assist an applicant in making a law school selection that is an informed one.

Our alumni may elect one or more of the following options:

  1. They can email up to five admitted applicants and respond to their questions, if any.
  2. They can offer to meet with an admitted applicant. This may include inviting   the applicant to "shadow" them at the workplace, join them for lunch or attend a   local Bar Association event.
  3. They may staff a table at a recruiting function in their
area for a limited amount of time.

The Admission Office will provide the necessary support and materials so that the alumnus can successfully complete his/her assignments quickly and easily.

Our alumni can make a difference to someone by rendering excellent advice based upon their experience both with the application process and Law School. We hope that the admitted applicants that are contacted will select William & Mary Law School not only for the excellence of our programs but also because an alumnus took time from his/her busy schedule to tell them about William & Mary. If you have any questions, please call (757) 221-3307.

If you are interested in volunteering to be an Alumni Admission Ambassador, please select one or more of the above options and provide that information to Assistant Dean for Admission Neal E. Wixson, together with your name, mailing address, phone number, email address and undergraduate school. Please send the information by email, fax or regular mail to:
