Submitting Exams to Blackboard

NOTE -- The Blackboard file upload functions only with Microsoft or Apple Macintosh Operating Systems.  If your computer uses a different operating system, you must save your exam to a nonreturnable disk or thumb/flash drive and this disk or thumb/flash drive must then be submitted to Gloria Todd, Room 101, BEFORE the stated end-time of your exam.  (I.e., allow time to save to the disk or thumb/flash drive and walk to Gloria's office.)

1. Complete your exam and save it on the computer that you are using to access Blackboard.

2.  Be sure to name the file with your anonymous exam ID you may also add the course name to the file to avoid confusion. NOTE: Since all exams need to be saved with your anonymous exam code it is best to save each exam in a unique or separate folder on your computer to avoid confusion between each of your exams. Your file should be saved as a Word document (.doc) or a plain text file (.txt).  You should not have any identifying information attached to your Word/Text document.  The following link provides information on how to remove personal information from MS Word Documents http://www.wm.edu/law/academicprograms/regulations/disableembeddednamefeature.shtml

3.  Go to http://blackboard.wm.edu  Works best with Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox (not the Beta version).

4.  Login.  For exam submission, your login is wmb (all lowercase) plus your exam code. For example, if your exam code is 1234567, then your login is:  wmb1234567.  Your password is exactly the same as your login, i.e., wmb and your exam code number.

5. The Blackboard Welcome page will appear. On the right side of the screen, under “My Courses” your courses that may require exams to be submitted with Blackboard will be listed.  NOTE: not all of your courses will be listed – only those that may require an exam or paper submission.  Then you will follow steps 3-9 below to submit an exam.

6.  If you have problems logging in, submitting your exam or connecting to Blackboard during an exam please save to a disk.  All students should be prepared to save to a disk in the case of power or network problems.

Exam Upload Trial Run

1.  Click on “Law School Sample Exam Spr 2008.” A new screen appears.

2.  A screen opens with Assignments available, there is one “FINAL” Exam Submission and two “Additional” Exam Submissions.

3.  Click on “View/Complete Assignment: FINAL Exam Submission”. Scroll down the screen to “Attach local file” and use the “Browse” button to find your exam for uploading.  Do not save your exam with special characters in the name, use only your anonymous exam code and course name as the name of your exam file.   Once you have navigated to the folder where the file is located, highlight the file and then click “Open”.  The filepath will now appear in the box next to the Browse button.

4.  Select “Submit.” Do NOT click “Save.”

5.   Click the “Submit” button on the bottom of the Blackboard screen.  You will NOT be able to remove the file once you’ve sent it to the Instructor.  If you make a mistake,  contact Dean Jackson.

6.   You should see a confirmation message reading “The assignment is complete. Click OK to review the results.” Click  “OK."

7.   If you click OK to review the results, you will see the file you attached which you can open and view, but you cannot remove or change it.
