Curriculum

LAW 742-01 Appellate Litigation Clinic 2 credits
The new Appellate Litigation Clinic will offer an opportunity for second and third year students to research, draft and file briefs in support of actual cases pending in Virginia’s appellate courts. Students will work in pairs, under the close supervision of admitted attorneys, to compile and organize the record on appeal, research legal issues presented by the appeal, and draft briefs arguing those points. Students with valid third year practice certificates may also participate in oral argument depending on their schedule and the courts’ docketing procedures. The class will meet six times, with classroom work devoted to developing persuasive writing techniques, organizing and drafting the appellate brief, format requirements and Rules of Appellate Procedure. Outside of class, students will meet with their supervising attorney, clients and support personnel as necessary to complete their research and writing tasks. Enrollment is limited to eight.
